Microsoft said that there will be no official support for Windows 10 after October 2025. Microsoft 365 app and security updates, however, will still be available until 2028.
Microsoft has also announced that the official support of Windows 10 will expire on October 14, 2025. Users will no longer be getting periodic feature updates and security patches for the operating system from this date forward. Support for certain services on the platform, however, will last a much longer period than the deadline.
Extended Support beyond 2025
Despite the withdrawal of initial support, Microsoft has characterized extended service in these areas:
Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook will be updated and protected until October 10, 2028.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus will continue to offer threat definitions and security intelligence within the same period.
Transition Plans and Support Plans
To help customers move from Windows 10, Microsoft is providing a range of choices:
Extended Security Updates (ESU) will be available for purchase or included in some programs such as Microsoft Rewards or eligible OneDrive subscribers.
Extended support will be available for business users through paid support bundles.
Upgrade hardware and supplies are being made available to help organizations and individuals transition to Windows 11 or Microsoft's cloud-based solutions.
Why It Matters
This phased retirement of Windows 10 provides users and IT administrators with time to have safe migrations prepared without impacting productivity. Microsoft 365 applications and Defender's long-term update cadence preserves productivity and security during the transition.
